The Four Levels

Donald Kirkpatrick, Professor Emeritus at the University of Wisconsin and past president of the American Society for Training and Development (ASTD), first published his Four-Level Training Evaluation Model in 1959, in the US Training and Development Journal.

The model was then updated in 1975, and again in 1994, when he published his best-known work, "Evaluating Training Programs."

The four levels are:

Level 1: Reaction

This level measures the way your students (the folks being trained), responded towards the training. Clearly, you would like them to believe that working out would be a valuable experience, and you would like them to be ok with the trainer, the subject, the fabric, its presentation, and also the venue.

Level 2: Learning

At level 2, you measure what your students have discovered. Just how much has their understanding elevated consequently from the training?

Whenever you planned working out session, you hopefully began with a listing of specific learning objectives: these ought to be the beginning point for the measurement. Bear in mind that you could measure learning diversely based on these objectives, and based on whether you are thinking about changes to understanding, abilities, or attitude.

Level 3: Behavior

Only at that level, you evaluate what lengths your students have transformed their behavior, in line with the training they received. Particularly, this examines how students use the information.

Level 4: Results

Only at that level, you evaluate the outcome of the training. Including final results that you and your organization have going to be great for business, great for the workers, or great for the conclusion.
